The Coelho Ranch Foundation’s first Sensory Trail community event was an incredible success. Nearly 70 guests joined us for a day filled with laughter, good food, and genuine connection. It was a celebration of what happens when people come together, not just to enjoy the ranch, but to build something that will last for generations.
Families explored the future trail route, stopping to learn about each planned station from the Kiddy Corral & Inclusive Tractor Playground to Gilbert’s Rock & Bone Quarry and the peaceful Listening Grove Picnic Area. Children climbed, swung, and played, while parents and visitors discovered how each part of the trail will engage the senses, sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell, and welcome everyone, regardless of ability.
The atmosphere was joyful. Guests shared meals, swapped stories, and walked the grounds beneath warm skies and shady oaks. Many spoke about how important this project is not just for the ranch, but for all of South Monterey County. They talked about access, belonging, and the need for spaces where every family can play, learn, and rest together.
Sensory Trail Features in Planning Stage
We also received wonderful news during the event: a $25,000 grant from the Karnell Foundation was awarded to support Phase 1 of the Sensory Trail. This generous contribution brings us one step closer to our $325,000 goal and fuels our mission to expand accessibility across the region. It’s a gift that honors community, inclusion, and the belief that nature should be open to all.
Throughout the day, the excitement was contagious. Guests lingered to watch the ducks, visit the orchard, and imagine what the finished trail will look like. Many offered to volunteer or donate materials a clear sign that the community is ready to help move this vision forward.
This event marks an important milestone in the growth of the Sensory Trail, which will feature eleven interactive stations that connect people to the land and to each other. With every conversation, every donation, and every shared story, this project continues to gain momentum.
As we look ahead, the Coelho Ranch Foundation will be reaching out to local families, schools, and partners to build on this energy. More gatherings, volunteer opportunities, and sponsorship events are already in motion.
The Sensory Trail is more than a project it’s a promise. A promise that everyone, regardless of age or ability, deserves a place in nature to explore, heal, and belong.
